What is EAN-13?
EAN-13 is one of the most recognizable retail barcode formats worldwide. It carries a GTIN-13 and is part of the GS1 EAN/UPC family used by retail point-of-sale systems.
Structure
The printed digits include the GS1 prefix/company numbering structure, item reference and check digit as embodied in the assigned GTIN.
EAN-13 vs UPC-A
Both belong to the same EAN/UPC family. UPC-A is commonly associated with GTIN-12 in North America, while EAN-13 carries GTIN-13 and is widely used internationally.
Printing considerations
Do not crop quiet zones or distort the aspect ratio. Retail scanners rely on consistent bar/space dimensions and suitable symbol contrast.
Practical implementation advice
Barcode artwork that looks correct on screen can still fail after printing. Preserve quiet zones, avoid non-uniform scaling, choose an appropriate X-dimension or module size, and test the final printed symbol with the scanners and software used in the real workflow.
