What is GS1 DataMatrix?
GS1 DataMatrix combines the compact ECC 200 Data Matrix symbology with GS1 element-string syntax. It can encode standardized identifiers and attributes such as GTIN, lot, serial and expiration date.
How it differs from ordinary Data Matrix
A GS1 DataMatrix begins with FNC1 and follows GS1 Application Identifier rules. An ordinary ISO/IEC Data Matrix symbol does not automatically carry GS1 semantics.
Why it is useful
The symbol can fit significant structured data into a small physical area, making it especially useful where space and traceability are both important.
Scanner output
GS1-capable scanners can identify the carrier as GS1 DataMatrix and transmit element strings for application processing. Implementations should follow current GS1 specifications.
Practical implementation advice
Barcode artwork that looks correct on screen can still fail after printing. Preserve quiet zones, avoid non-uniform scaling, choose an appropriate X-dimension or module size, and test the final printed symbol with the scanners and software used in the real workflow.
